RSS Feeds: the Basics

What’s RSS? An RSS reader? Funny you should ask.

RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, brings automatically-updated information straight to your desktop. You can monitor news, job listings, personals, and classifieds. More and more sites offer feeds, which you can identify by a small button that says either RSS or XML. However, if you click one of these links, you will most likely get a page full of code in your browser. To properly read the feed, you need an RSS reader.

Set up an RSS reader and receive updates to breaking NFRA news

Setting up your very own RSS feed involves two simple steps:

  1. Choose a feed reader. Even if you’re unfamiliar with news feeds, they are easy to use.
    First, download a newsreader application like FeedDemon (Windows) or NetNewsWire (Mac). Then, copy and paste the address of any news feed into the application’s “subscribe” dialogue. Learn more about RSS newsreaders.

    You can also monitor your feeds through your own web browser. Some browsers natively read RSS feeds via built-in widgets. Examples include Firefox's Sage and Google Reader.

  2. Add the USNFRA feed to your reader, which you can do by clicking the grey rss feed link on any NFRA web page;
    OR by copying and pasting the link "http://www.usnfra.org/feed.xml" into your feed reader’s “add a subscription” window.
